Fabric Jelly Rolls are Perfect for Crib Quilts
One of the best gifts one can give an expecting mother is a handmade crib quilt. Not only is it from the heart, but practical as well. A great way to make a crib quilt is to make use of fabric jelly rolls. Fabric jelly rolls consist of a strip bundle of fabric that is rolled up and tied with a ribbon. They gain their name because when rolled up they resemble a jelly roll in appearance. A typical fabric jelly roll comes with 40 strips of fabric which measure 2.5" x 44" which when added up altogether equals around 3 yards of fabric.
One of the great things about using fabric jelly rolls is that you do not have to worry about finding fabrics that match each other. The jelly rolls are made up of coordinating fabrics that can fit just about any theme or color scheme. In addition to being perfect for crib quilts, you may also have enough material left over to create other matching items for the baby, depending on the size of quilt you make.
When making a crib quilt as a gift, be sure to consult the recipient about what colors would go with the decor of the nursery. It would be horrible for you to put in so much thought and effort into creating something that would clash. If the recipient doesn't have a certain theme or color scheme planned consider sticking to light colors that can match just about everything.
If you are creating a quilt for a baby girl's crib pastel colors such as pink or lavender are highly popular colors which should be considered. In addition to these colors, consider patterns that revolve around butterflies and flowers. Many baby items for girls revolve around these themes, so you are sure to match the nursery.
Should the baby be a boy the perfect choice in colors would be red or blue. If the sex of the baby is unknown it is best to stick with gender neutral colors such as light yellow, green, or a classic white. Should you want the quilt to follow a theme jungle animals, ducks or frogs are all great choices.
